Homemade Organic Vapor Rub - Mayernik Kitchen

I had been using Vick’s Vapo Rub for as long as I can remember.  Some of my fondest childhood memories - though they involve being sick - were of my mom rubbing the soothing cream on my chest in the hopes of some easy breathing at bedtime.  Now, many of this Vapo Rub’s abilities are just starting to come alive as people are recognizing its abilities to soothe sore muscles, relieve joint pain, and even ease nightly coughing spells when lathered on our feet (who knew??).  However, how safe is this Vapo Rub in reality?  Sadly, it’s alarmingly nowhere near as safe as our organic version, which is available in this months Out of the Woods Apothecary Box

I know you are probably tired of hearing us preach to “GO ORGANIC”, but really, it’s something we cannot stress enough.  Though I would never tell anyone else how to live, I personally have a hard time eating and using ingredients that I cannot pronounce let alone ingest, and most mass-produced products contain more useless - or worse, harmful - ingredients than they do beneficial ones.  In fact, one main active ingredient in Vick’s Vapo Rub is camphor, which has been banned for consumption because of its side effects, and is only permitted for very limited external use on the skin.  Why bother using this as an ingredient at all?

There is a simple solution to this, of course.  You can easily make your own, which is always a great alternative so you can include exactly what you want - you know, like home cooking vs. restaurant food.  Our version of an organic vapor rub contains significantly less on the ingredient list than the commercial stuff, all of which is pronounceable, and most of which you’ve probably heard of before.  Our rub includes regular household items like olive oil and beeswax in combination with the soothing scents of menthol crystals and eucalyptus oil for a rejuvenating rub to use when you’re feeling under the weather.  For minor muscle and joint paint?  Rub a little on those ailing areas for a soothing relief.  Feeling congested?  Lather some on your upper chest and throat to relieve this symptom.  Fear of a cough keeping you up all night?  Spread some on the bottoms of your feet, cover with clean white socks, and sleep the night away - cough free!  Or, if nothing else, just enjoy the soothing scent as much as we do.
