Only ONE week to Shop for Christmas - Mayernik Style

By Shannon, Posted in Personal

With the holidays quickly approaching, this should be a time for togetherness, family, and cheer.  However, people tend to become so bogged down with their shopping stresses that they forget what the holidays are truly about.  In classic Mayernik fashion, we try to avoid the burdensome holiday stress, and keep it as simply and easy as possible.  There are a variety of ways to avoid the commercial blues that come with the holidays, so if you find yourself needing a little cheery pick-me-up, keep reading to see how we survive the holidays in a happy, successful way each year.

1. Go Local – To us, there is nothing better than avoiding the crowds of big malls.  Even if you love the hustle and bustle, mad rush of holiday shopping, you can still achieve this on a local level.  Regardless of where you live, there is bound to be a wealth of local shops with a little something for everyone.  Whenever possible, I try to utilize a smaller shop rather than going down the road of big, terrifying department stores.

2. Go Green – A reusable gift is not only environmentally friendly, but it is the gift that keeps on giving!  One time, for example, I made reusable produce bags for some of my closest friends and family.  These are things that are often overlooked, and definitely underappreciated; however, they come in handy at least once a week!

3.  Go Homemade – Whether creative, crafty, or cook-worthy, gifts made from the heart are always the most well-received. Don’t worry if your goods don’t come out looking Pinterest Perfect; they will definitely be considered perfect to your loved ones.
One Mother’s Day, on a whim, I whipped up some Grapefruit Sugar Scrub.  I had never done anything like that before, but everyone loved it.  Take a chance – you’ll do great!

4.  Go Small Business – Extra points here for handmade goods.  One of my personal favorites is Etsy.  Seriously, spend a few moments perusing the site – search for anything – and you’ll never turn back!
