Herbs that can be used As a Diuretic

What is a Diuretic?

Diuretic, sometimes referred to as water pills, is a pharmacological action that accounts for increased diuresis/urination. It augments the excretion of salts and water from the body by altering the processes at the kidney level.

In 1919, modern history reports the use of mercurial injections to excrete excessive water in patients with syphilis and edema. By the 1950s, first-generation carbonic anhydrase was developed. But even before the dawn of medicine, herbs were employed to purge toxins via urine.

Diuretics act by reducing salt reabsorption that occurs at various sites in the nephron, hence elevating the salt and water loss. Some other diuretics work by inhibiting the vasopressin receptors that block the water reabsorption in the tubules and collecting duct.

What are the herbal benefits of diuretics?

Diuretics increase urination which in turn supports the treatment of:

  • Edema
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Kidney diseases
  • Swollen tissues

3 Herbs Recommended as a diuretic

Goldenrod

Goldenrod

Goldenrod (Solidago) has a misguided reputation for bringing allergies but its heavy pollen grains cannot fly in the wind and are rather insect pollinated. Its undying affinity for the kidneys makes it perfect for flushing out harmful toxins and supports good health. It increases the urinary output that reduces inflammation, edema, and other urine-related irregularities.

Add Goldenrod tea to your routine and purge the toxins that stand between you and your healthy life.

Horehound

Horehound

Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) used to be the favorite of the Egyptian priests and they hailed it as the Seed of Horus and the Bull’s Blood. Be it respiratory tract infection or digestive tract irregularities, the versatility of the horehound knows no bounds.

Use 1 tablespoon of Horehound tea regularly to support your kidney health and reduce the chances of developing urinary tract infections.

Stinging Nettle

Stinging Nettle

Nettle (Urtica dioicia) is one the nature’s oldest gifts that induces diuresis to flush out excess water and salts from the body and relieve joint pain.  It improves kidney health, maintains respiratory tract integrity, and nourishes the skeletal muscles for the proper functioning of the body.

Brew a comforting cup of Nettle-Dried and nourish your immune and lymphatic system to feel the surge of vitality.
